Warm, Windy Weekend in Store for High Plains

Kansas City, Mo., Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 – After a round of rain showers, today, in Minnesota, western Wisconsin and most of Iowa, High Plains residents can expect warm and windy conditions through the coming weekend, according to NOAA weather forecasters.

See the daily weather threats map at http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/noaa/noaa.gif and the Weather Hazards map at http://www.weather.gov/largemap.php

The only other precipitation expected today is snow in New England states, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Wyoming. Heavy snow is possible, today, in central Idaho and northwestern Wyoming.

High winds could pose problems across much of the north-central and central parts of the country, including parts of Colorado, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri and Illinois.

Combined with high temperatures and low humidity levels, the winds heighten the risk of wild fires in several areas today. National Weather Service forecast offices in Rapid City and Sioux Falls, S.D.; North Platte, Neb.; and Bismarck, N.D.; have issued wildfire statements alerting residents to the high risk.

High winds will cause travel problems for high profile and lightweight vehicles until this afternoon in parts of north-central Colorado and southeastern Wyoming, especially in the mountain areas. Gusts to 50 mph pose travel risks in Colorado, according to forecasters at NOAA’s Boulder office. Cheyenne forecasters said sustained winds in Wyoming will be in the 35-45 mph range with gusts to 60 mph.

High winds will pose hazards to commercial and recreational boaters in parts of the Great Lakes, today. Small Craft Advisories for near-shore waters and Gale Warnings for open waters of western Lake Superior are in effect until 10 p.m. EST, today, and for Lake Michigan until 6 a.m., Saturday.

NOAA’s 5-day rainfall graphic at http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/qpf/p120i00.gif shows very light to no rain for the Plains through the weekend. Daily rainfall forecast graphics may be found at http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/qpf/qpf2.shtml.

Flooding from recent heavy rains will continue for the near future in the Mississippi Valley. Details are available from NOAA’s Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service at http://www.weather.gov/ahps.
